Imps

Imps are the first and most basic beasts you will come across. They come in five different varieties and are found throughout the whole of Nippon. They are very easy to beat and stand more as obstacles to slow Amaterasu down than full on enemies. They are seen as cheeky and monkey-like who enjoy music. They all wear paper masks with red markings on and their symbol is the Infinity sign.

In Okamiden, Imps now take on a smaller, more child like form. However, larger more Okami-style Red and Green Imps appear.

These Imps are the first and easiest to beat. They often appear along side other, stronger Imps instead of by themselves, and are usually in packs of two or three. They hold a flute which they use to shoot things at Amaterasu, although this does not do much, if any damage. They are first encountered in River of the Heavens. They will taunt both Amaterasu and Chibiterasu by slapping their rear end and laughing. Their ghosts can be found in the Sunken Ship.

Bestiary Entry

Rude monkey-like creatures that harass and tease humans. Whether frightening the locals or causing outbreaks of disease, these troublemakers have proven to be the bane of humanity. Said to hide in gloomy places, they are portrayed as flautists.

[edit] Okamiden

Green Imps return in Okamiden. They are the first Demons we see that have returned to Nippon as a pair attack Issun at the start of the game. In Okamiden, they wear origami hats instead of paper masks and they are more child like. It is said that Green Imps were once little children who transformed after becoming friends with the other Green Imps. They lack a Floral Finisher. They attack Chibiterasu by using their paper paddle to hit projectiles at him, rather like a game of Hanetsuki.

Larger Okami Style Green Imps also appear when Chibiterasu goes back in time with Kurow. They are often Imp Merchants.

[edit] Red Imps

Weapon(s)Okami: Lute
Okamiden: Paddle, Spinning Top

The Red Imps are often found alongside Green and Yellow imps. They play a lute which they also use to smash down on Ammy to attack. If stunned, they will turn grey briefly, and this will be the chance to Power Slash the strings on the lute, breaking it. The imp will then be defenceless. They are first encountered in Kamiki Village. Mika's Wanted List is comprised of Red Imps.

Bestiary Entry

These lute-players are harder to exorcise than Green Imps. One night, a man heard lute music and went out to find the source. Hiding in the shadows, he saw the Imps stop playing and drink sake. Seeing his chance to attack, the man struck out, severing the lute strings with his blade. The Imps disappeared in a wisp of smoke. It is advisable to cut the strings with a brush.

[edit] Okamiden

Red Imps also make a reappearance in Okamiden, where they wear an Origami crane as a hat. They carry a paddle and hit Chibiterasu with projectiles like the Green Imp, however they can also be found riding upon an Ice Lip Spinning Top. It uses the paddle to speed its top up. It can also harness elemental attacks while riding on the Spinning Top. However, the Spinning Top can be destroyed by Power Slash, leaving the Red Imp on foot for the rest of the battle. Only when its top is destroyed, can its Floral Finisher be used. Although it can no longer use the elemental attacks, it can still summon smaller tops that fly across the ground, inflicting damage. They are first encountered in Shinshu Field.

Larger Okami Style Red Imps also appear when Chibiterasu travels back in time with Kurow.

[edit] Yellow Imp

WeaknessesOkami: Inability to see Amaterasu Okamiden: Reflected Projectiles
Weapon(s)Okami: Shockwaves
Okamiden: Projectiles
Floral FinisherOkami: Power Slash
Okamiden: Cherry Bomb

These are the biggest imps of all. They brandish a large drum and dive underground to avoid attacks. When they pop up they will beat on their drum a few times, finishing with one big pound, that causes harmful shockwaves to tremble across the ground, these need to be avoided by jumping. If you run behind them as they pop up they will become momentarily confused and vulnerable to attack. They are first encountered in Hana Valley.

Bestiary Entry

Folklore has it that these Imps never cease in their mischief. Burrowing beneath the ground, they sound their mighty drums. The drums' vibrations shake the earth. Jump to avoid this attack. Legends tell us to lure them from the ground and strike them from behind. Though riddled with disease, they are often portrayed whimsically. These stories are meant to make them seem less threatening.

[edit] Okamiden

Yellow Imps reappear in Okamiden, where they wear an Naga-Kabuto style hat. However, unlike in Okami, they do not carry a giant drum and dig under the earth to attack with it. Instead they carry a Kendama. Their Kendama does not have a ball attached to it, but rather a human skull. Yellow Imps scourge the lands looking for new human body parts for their toys, however the legends go that a brave Samurai freed the bones by burying them.

As well as attacking with the mallet, it can use it as a helicopter to fly into the air. It will then fire down exploding skulls. If you knock it out of the air, it will become stunned and will not return to the air for quite some time. Instead it will heave and fling heavier skulls at Chibiterasu. These skulls can be reflected back at it with Power Slash which will stun it and leave it open to attack. They are first encountered in Shinshu Field.

Blue Imp

Galestorm
Weapon(s)Okami: Flute, Projectiles
Okamiden: Claws, Bubbles
Floral FinisherOkami: Galestorm
Okamiden: Power Slash

The blue imps are able to take to the skies using a giant kite. Whilst flying, they are hard to reach and shoot things at Amaterasu. They can be knocked out of the sky using Galestorm or their kite can be broken using Power Slash. They are first encountered in Kusa Village as Princess Fuse is possessed by one. They use their flute to fire darts at Amaterasu.

Bestiary Entry

Unique among their brethren, these Imps display a penchant for flying through the air while strapped to kites. Tossing insults and rude language from above, they float menacingly. Their offensive nature is only matched by their clever wits. Tales abound of their crashing due to strong gusts of wind.

[edit] Okamiden

Unlike in Okami, they will not fly around the arena using kites. When fought, there will never be any other enemies in the arena with them. There will be six burrows along the edge of the arena, which they use to dig down under the ground. They can attack by blowing bubbles out of the burrows that will trap and injure Chibiterasu or they can leap out of the burrows and slash him with their claws. Their Floral Finisher is Power Slash after their life bar is reduced to zero. They are first encountered as enemies in South Ryoshima Coast.

Blue Imps also appear as Imp Merchants.

Black Imp

WeaknessesOkami: Destroy Skulls
Okamiden: Reflected projectiles
Weapon(s)Okami: Lasers, Drum
Okamiden: Projectiles, Clamp
Floral FinisherOkami: Power Slash
Okamiden: Magnetism

These are most fearsome and hardest to beat imp, they different in appearance to the other imps in the fact that they do not wear masks, instead having red markings on their face and horns and tusks. They have four skulls floating around them which can shoot lasers, though these can be destroyed with a power slash. They carry a small drum, most probably a bongo, although this is never stated for sure. They are first encountered in Moon Cave, in the Calcified Cavern.

Bestiary Entry

Regarded as the most fearsome Imp, tales abound of their evil nature. The skulls they manipulate are said to be those of human victims. The act of drawing them is thought to bring doom on one's house. Exorcising the skulls with the brush before viewing is advised. If you've no brush, use a finger to draw a slash through them.

[edit] Okamiden

Their hat is a cross between an origami crane and the tradition helmet. They are first encountered in Ryoshima Coast. It attacks by throwing the mallet style rectangular blocks it carries at Chibiterasu. It can also separate into many pieces and fly around the arena before quickly reassembling an throwing itself at Chibiterasu to injure him. It can fire the wedges from its abdomen at Chibiterasu and if these are reflected back with Power Slash, the Black Imp will be stunned. It's head can detach from it's body and latch onto Chibiterasu, hampering his movement and damaging him. It is indestructible when its body is in pieces. Their Floral Finisher is Magnetism after reducing their life bars to zero. They are first encountered in the Moon Tribe Ruins.

Chibiterasu must fight one in the Dark Realm to free Kagu.

[edit] MC Imp

The MC Imp appears in the Demon Market in Okamiden where he is running a tournament with Nanami as the main prize. He resembles a normal Green Imp apart from his gold origami hat and a sceptre with a skull upon it. When Chibiterasu and Kurow return to the Demon Market in search of Kurow's missing Imp feather, he can be seen fanning the raging Witch Queen.

Chibiterasu does not have to battle him.

[edit] Green Imp?

Chibiterasu and Kurow encounter this Imp upon their second visit to Demon Market. He has managed to find Kurow's lost wings and he must be fought to retrieve them. Although he wears the wings, he looks and fights exactly like a regular Green Imp. However, he does have a Floral Finisher, Power Slash.

Bestairy Entry
"This strange imp is a collector of beautiful things. Many imps depend on him for many things, and he enjoys a high degree of popularity among the females. His book on anti-aging tips has burned up the bestsellers charts."

[edit] Intelligence

Amaterasu and Chibiterasu both manage to easily convince Imps that they are one of them by simply drawing an Imp face on a piece of paper and using it as a mask. By doing this they gain entry to Moon Cave and Demon Market respectively. This shows that they are not very intelligent and easily outwitted. However we are not sure if Chibiterasu manages to fool just Imps or Imps and other Demons.

Some Imps can even talk and they work quite efficiently as Merchants. All Imps found in Moon Cave can talk and have a specific role that they carry out efficently.

As we see in Okamiden, two Imps, Aji and Umami, are top class chefs in the Demon world. This suggests that they may not all be dimwitted. Umami appears to be quite bossy and devious, she even concocts a plan to trap Charity in a giant pot so she can be made into a meal. Even in Okami, Imp Chef Ajimi was able to cook a "delicious" meals for the Orochi, although he was not world class. It is also notable that Umami is the first noticeably female Imp
